March – St. Mary’s Food Bank
March is National Nutrition Month, and we’re supporting St. Mary’s Food Bank! Founded in Phoenix in 1967 by John van Hengel who was heartbroken by a mother struggling to feed her and her children, he created the “food bank” concept to facilitate food donations from the community and corporations. With a local parish’s support of $3,000 and an abandoned building, the first food bank was established and named after the parish. John, known as the “Father of Food Banking,” also founded Feeding America and the Global FoodBanking Network. Today, St. Mary’s distributes food to families, children, seniors, and local programs in the Phoenix Area at no cost. Donate HERE.
